The Listing of Historic Resources is comprised of all the polygons that represent Historic Resources areas in Alberta. Historic Resources are land sections that possess known historic resources or have high potential for their presence, including archaeological, palaeontological, historical, natural and cultural resources. The purpose is for the protection of historic resources in Alberta.
The Listing of Historic Resources dataset provides users with GIS ready polygonal representation of all Historic Resources in the province of Alberta, and is suitable for indexing or analysis purposes. This is the public version of the listing.

Road Allowances have been dissolved into the associated adjacent LSD to allow for gapless spatial representation of features. Symbolization and Record Order The order of data in the GIS layer differs from the order of the tabular datasets. The HRV values from HRV 5 to HRV 1 are drawn to ensure that the more significant areas are shown above those of lower significance (ie: HRV1 > HRV5). Provincial Boundary All features of the listing have been clipped to the Province of Alberta boundary. For features that fall across this boundary, the spatial representation is only within Alberta, however, the ATS attributes still reflect the full coverage of the feature. National Historic Sites of Canada As of September 2011, the National Historic Sites of Canada have been incorporated into the listing as HRV 3 historic sites. CFB Suffield Area As of September 2011, the area of CFB Suffield is included in the Listing of Historic Resources. The classification of LSD grids by HRV value and category is programmatically derived from the numerous source datasets created and maintained by Culture and Tourism. Once the algorithm is run to generate the thematic data, it is cross referenced against the source datasets to ensure that the classification is correct. Further, subjec matter experts are required to give their approval of the representation of their specific category before publication of this listing.

The Listing of Historic Resources is automatically generated with a custom application that spatially selects LSDs from the Alberta Township System grid using a number of spatial feature classes maintained by Alberta Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women (CMSW). These feature classes include: archaeological sites, traditional use sites, Register of Historic Places, high potential lands, Historic Resources Management Areas, Ammonite Shell Agreements, and sensitivity for palaeontological resources. Attributes of these feature classes, most importantly "Historic Resource Value", are associated with the LSD spatial data, resulting in categorized and classified polygons that constitute the Listing of Historic Resources.
The Listing of Historic Resources is automatically generated with a custom application that spatially selects LSDs from the Alberta Township System grid (v4.1, derived LSD dataset with dissolved Road Allowances) using a number of spatial feature classes maintained by Alberta Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women. These feature classes include: archaeological sites, traditional use sites, Register of Historic Places, high potential lands, Historic Resources Management Areas, Ammonite Shell Agreements, and sensitivity for palaeontological resources. Attributes of these feature classes, most importantly "Historic Resource Value", are linked with the LSD spatial data, resulting in the polygons that constitute the Listing of Historic Resources. The polygons are generlized into individual records based on the ATS section, but specific to the LSD in shape and attribute.

Python scripts used to process the Listing replaced with FME Tools processes of equivalent function. Addition of steps to determine reason for inclusion or exclusion of particular LSDs.
FME Tools spatial processing has proven to be more precise in determination of intersects. Processing also makes full use of multi-core processing and high availability of RAM to allow processes to run much faster. The processing environment also yields much more valuable diagnostic feedback. New processes enable better tracking to determine cause of inclusion or exclusion of particular LSDs.
